Charcoal Nightmare is a black-and-white horror tarot deck drawn in charcoal on cream paper. It is one of six premium decks on Zorynthia, a web app for AI tarot and astrology readings, and it has the full 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. Every classic scene is redrawn as a nightmare, with gaunt, skeletal figures, too many eyes and jaws that open wider than any skull should allow. There is no colour, no blood and no nudity; the dread comes from smudged black shading and unsettling detail.

The artwork is the only thing this deck changes. Each card keeps its traditional meaning, so Death in Charcoal Nightmare still speaks of an ending and a transition rather than literal danger, however grim the skeleton rider looks. The deck comes with the Arcana Pass subscription at €11.99 a month; without it you can only preview the cards. It suits people who like gothic art, horror and hand-drawn illustration.

What does Charcoal Nightmare look like?

Each card is drawn in charcoal on cream cotton paper, with sharp eraser highlights on bone and teeth and grey fingerprints in the margins. A hand-drawn double line with slightly rounded corners frames the picture, with a Roman numeral or suit sign boxed at the top and a hand-lettered title below.

The scenes are classic; the figures are nightmares. The Fool nears a cliff as bony hands reach up from below, beneath a sun that is a single staring eye. Cups are cracked chalices with eyes on their stems, Wands are gnarled staffs with eyes in the bark, rusted Swords have serrated blades, and Pentacles bear a pentagram around an open eye. The back is a many-eyed moon with a sewn-shut mouth, ringed by thorns and flanked by skulls.

Who is Charcoal Nightmare for?

This deck is for people who want their tarot dark: horror fans and anyone drawn to gothic illustration, old engravings or charcoal drawing. It fits questions that call for honesty more than comfort, such as a relationship that is ending, a job you are afraid to lose or a decision you keep putting off. The grotesque style can make a heavy subject easier to look at from a distance.

It is not for everyone. If disturbing images stay with you, or you want a gentle, calming reading, one of the lighter decks will serve you better. And whatever the deck, a Zorynthia reading is entertainment and a prompt for self-reflection; neither the cards nor the AI predict the future or replace professional advice.

How do you get a Charcoal Nightmare reading on Zorynthia?

With Arcana Pass active, type your question, choose a category (love, career, finance, spirituality or general) and pick Charcoal Nightmare. Then decide whether this reading draws from the 22 Major Arcana only or from all 78 cards. In tarot tradition the Major Arcana cover big life themes, while the full deck adds everyday situations.

Three cards are drawn at random for past, present and future. The AI interprets each one in the light of your question, then writes a summary, all streamed live on screen. Up to two extra cards are available at 1 token each, and the reading is saved in your history. The interpretation follows the card's traditional meaning, not the drawing, so the charcoal gloom does not make the reading any darker.

Charcoal Nightmare: frequently asked questions

How much does Charcoal Nightmare cost?

Charcoal Nightmare is included in Arcana Pass, Zorynthia's subscription at €11.99 a month. The subscription also gives you 150 tokens every month, all six premium decks and free weekly and monthly horoscopes. Buying token packs does not give access to Charcoal Nightmare; without the subscription the deck can only be previewed.

How many cards are in Charcoal Nightmare?

Charcoal Nightmare is a complete 78-card tarot deck: 22 Major Arcana numbered 0 to 21 and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits, Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. With Arcana Pass you choose for each reading whether to draw from the Major Arcana alone or from the whole Charcoal Nightmare deck.

Do Charcoal Nightmare cards mean anything different from the Rider–Waite–Smith deck?

No. Charcoal Nightmare keeps the classic Rider–Waite–Smith card names, numbering and meanings; only the artwork is new. The AI reads each card by its traditional meaning and never looks at the illustration, so The Tower or the Ten of Swords in Charcoal Nightmare mean exactly what they mean in any standard deck.

Is Charcoal Nightmare scary?

Yes, on purpose. Charcoal Nightmare is drawn as horror: skeletal figures, extra eyes, bared needle teeth and heavy black shading. It shows no blood, wounds or nudity, so the fear comes from the drawing style rather than violent scenes. If you dislike horror imagery, a gentler free deck such as the pastel watercolour Misty Bloom is a better fit.
