Next new moon dates

A new moon is the moment the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and turns its unlit side toward us, so you can't see it in the sky. The first thin crescent usually appears a day or two later, low in the west just after sunset.

An eclipse's time is the moment of greatest eclipse. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere the Moon is above the horizon at the time. A penumbral eclipse only dims the Moon slightly, so it's easy to miss with the naked eye. A solar eclipse is total or annular only along the narrow path of the Moon's shadow and appears partial across a much wider area around it. Not every eclipse is visible from the US.

What a full moon is and why it comes every 29.5 days

A full moon is the moment the Moon sits on the far side of Earth from the Sun. We see its whole sunlit half, and the Moon rises around sunset and shines all night.

From one full moon to the next takes 29.53 days on average: 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. Astronomers call this the synodic month. A single cycle can run more than six hours shorter or longer, because the Moon's orbit is an ellipse and Earth doesn't circle the Sun at a constant speed. Twelve cycles add up to about 354 days, so full moons land about 11 days earlier on the calendar each year, and some years have 13 of them instead of 12.

Full moon names, from the Wolf Moon to the Cold Moon

In the US every month's full moon has a traditional name. Most come from Native American, colonial American and European folk calendars and were popularized by farmers' almanacs: Wolf Moon (January), Snow Moon (February), Worm Moon (March), Pink Moon (April), Flower Moon (May), Strawberry Moon (June), Buck Moon (July), Sturgeon Moon (August), Corn Moon (September), Hunter's Moon (October), Beaver Moon (November) and Cold Moon (December).

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the fall equinox: usually September's, which then takes the place of the Corn Moon, and in some years October's. The Hunter's Moon is the one after it. A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month and has nothing to do with color. A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse: Earth's shadow covers the full moon, and sunlight bent through our atmosphere turns it a coppery red. The tables on this page mark every eclipse.

Why the full moon's date depends on your time zone

A full moon happens at one moment for the whole Earth, but clocks around the world show different times. The full moon of December 2026 falls at 8:28 p.m. on December 23 in New York and 5:28 p.m. in Los Angeles, while in London it's already 1:28 a.m. on December 24, and in Tokyo 10:28 a.m. That's why calendars and apps from other countries sometimes give a different date.

Every time on this page is Eastern Time: EST (UTC-5) in winter and EDT (UTC-4) in summer, with the clock change already applied. For Central Time subtract one hour, for Mountain two and for Pacific three; Arizona, which skips daylight saving time, matches Pacific in summer. When a full moon falls shortly after midnight Eastern, it's still the evening before on the West Coast, and the note under the answer at the top of the page says so.

Full moons in holidays and folk tradition

Full moons have set the rhythm of calendars for thousands of years. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, but the churches set that full moon by their own tables, with the equinox always on March 21. Usually the result matches astronomy, yet sometimes it's a month off: in 2019 the first full moon after the equinox came on the evening of March 20 (Eastern Time), but Easter wasn't until April 21, and 2038 will see the same gap. Passover begins at the full moon of the month of Nisan, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is held at the full moon of the eighth lunar month, and the Buddhist festival of Vesak usually at the full moon in May.

Farmers' almanacs still print planting-by-the-Moon calendars: crops that grow above ground go in while the Moon is waxing, root vegetables while it's waning. Many people also time a haircut or a big cleanup to the moon phase, and the full moon is a popular time for personal rituals: taking stock, gratitude and letting go of what no longer serves you. These are customs and beliefs, not research-based advice, but many people find the rhythm helps them organize their month.

Frequently asked questions

When are the full moons this year?

A full moon comes every 29.5 days on average, so a year has 12 or 13 of them, and their dates move about 11 days earlier each year. The next three are on Tuesday, November 24, 2026 at 9:54 a.m., on Wednesday, December 23, 2026 at 8:28 p.m. and on Friday, January 22, 2027 at 7:17 a.m., all in Eastern Time. Every full moon of 2026 and 2027 is listed in the tables on this page.

Is it a full moon tonight?

No, the full moon was yesterday, on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 12:12 a.m. ET. The Moon is still 97% lit today, so it still looks full. The next full moon is on Tuesday, November 24, 2026 at 9:54 a.m. ET.

How long does a full moon last?

Astronomically, the full moon is a single moment: the instant the Moon sits exactly opposite the Sun. In the sky, though, you won't see a difference for about three nights. The day before and the day after, more than 95% of the Moon's face is lit, so to the eye it looks full.

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon is on Tuesday, November 24, 2026 at 9:54 a.m. Eastern Time (in 28 days). The Moon will be in Gemini. The next new moon is on Monday, November 9, 2026 at 2:02 a.m. ET.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon is a full moon that comes close to perigee, the point of the Moon's orbit nearest Earth. The Moon is then about 222,000 to 225,000 miles (357,000 to 362,000 km) away instead of the average 239,000 miles (384,000 km), so it looks up to 14% bigger and up to 30% brighter than a full moon near apogee. Unless you compare two photos side by side, the difference is hard to spot with the naked eye.

Does the full moon affect sleep?

The research is mixed. In a 2013 study at the University of Basel, people sleeping in a lab with no view of the sky took about 5 minutes longer to fall asleep around the full moon and slept about 20 minutes less. Several later studies didn't confirm the effect, so treat it as a curiosity rather than a rule.

When is the next new moon?

The next new moon is on Monday, November 9, 2026 at 2:02 a.m. Eastern Time (in 13 days). At new moon the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun and can't be seen in the sky. The new moons after it are in the table on this page.

Why do calendars give different times for the full moon?

Usually it's the time zone. Many sites and apps give the moment in UTC (Universal Time) or in another US time zone, and a full moon close to midnight then lands on a different date. A difference of a minute usually comes from rounding. The times on this page are Eastern Time with daylight saving time applied (EST, UTC-5, in winter and EDT, UTC-4, in summer). For Central Time subtract one hour, for Mountain two and for Pacific three.
