Free birth chart calculator: your natal chart, explained

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born: which signs and houses the Sun, Moon and planets were in. Enter your birth date, time and place, and we'll calculate it instantly, with an explanation of every placement.

Calculate your birth chart

No birth time? We can still calculate your chart, just without the rising sign and houses.

Any date from January 1, 1900, to today.

Local time where you were born, as it appears on your birth certificate. Don't adjust it for daylight saving time: we do that for you.

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a record of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It's drawn as a wheel: the twelve zodiac signs run around the outside, the twelve houses divide the inside, and between them sit the Sun, the Moon, the planets from Mercury to Pluto and the lunar node.

Your Sun sign, the one you know from horoscope columns, is only one piece of this map. A birth chart also shows where the Moon was, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon (your ascendant, or rising sign), which areas of life the planets fall in and what angles they form with each other. That's why two people born on the same day but at different times have noticeably different charts.

What do you need to calculate a birth chart?

Three things: your date, time and place of birth. The date gives the signs of the planets. The time and place determine the ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses, the most personal part of a chart.

Enter the time exactly as it was recorded: local time at your birthplace. Don't convert it to standard time or to UTC. We look up the time zone and the daylight saving rules in force there on that date, from War Time during World War II to Arizona and Hawaii, which skip daylight saving time. If you don't know your birth time, ask your parents or check your long-form birth certificate. The short version often leaves the time out, but hospital records or a baby book may have it.

Why does your birth time matter so much?

The Earth turns once a day, so in 24 hours the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon. The ascendant changes sign about every two hours on average, and the houses turn with it. A 15-minute difference moves the ascendant by several degrees, and by up to about seven in the fast-rising signs.

The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a half days, moving 12–15° a day. If it changed signs on the day you were born, there's no telling which one it was in without the time. The Sun and planets move more slowly: the Sun about one degree a day, and Mercury, the fastest planet, a little over two. Your birth time only changes their sign if they sat right on the border between two signs. The calculator checks this for you and tells you when it happened.

How to read a birth chart

Read a birth chart like a sentence: the planet tells you which part of you is at work, the sign tells you how, and the house tells you where in life. The Sun in Cancer in the 9th house is your identity (the Sun) expressed through care and sensitivity (Cancer) in matters of beliefs, learning and travel (the 9th house).

The most important part is the big three: the Sun, who you are; the Moon, what you need; and the ascendant, how you meet the world. Every astrologer starts there. Here's what each planet stands for:

Sun
Identity, will and vitality: who you want to be and where you want to shine. This is the sign you know from horoscopes.
Moon
Emotions, needs and instincts: what makes you feel safe and how you react before you've had time to think.
Mercury
Mind and speech: how you think, learn, ask questions and win people over.
Venus
Love, pleasure and values: what attracts you, how you show affection and what you find beautiful.
Mars
Energy, courage and desire: how you take action, how you stand up for what you want and what makes you lose your cool.
Jupiter
Growth, faith and generosity: where life opens up for you, and where luck, or excess, comes easily.
Saturn
Limits, duty and maturity: where life tests you and where you spend years building something that lasts.
Uranus
Freedom and change: where you break the mold and want to do things your own way. It spends about seven years in each sign, so you share its sign with people your age.
Neptune
Dreams, intuition and sensitivity: where boundaries blur and inspiration, or illusion, comes easily. Its sign is a trait of a whole generation.
Pluto
Power, crisis and transformation: where you go through hard times that change you from the inside. Like Neptune's, its sign says more about your generation than about you.
North Node
Not a planet but the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path. Astrology reads it as your direction of growth: what life keeps pulling you toward.

The houses in a birth chart and the Placidus system

The houses divide the sky into twelve parts, counted counterclockwise from the ascendant. Each house is one area of life, and a planet in a house shows where its energy works most strongly.

We calculate the houses with the Placidus system, one of the most widely used in Western astrology. It splits into three equal parts the time each point of the zodiac takes to travel from the horizon to the meridian, which is why the houses in one chart come in different sizes. Above 66° latitude, beyond the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, Placidus can't be calculated, so there we use the Porphyry system. A different house system is the most common reason two calculators put a planet in different houses.

House 1
You, your looks and the first impression you make. It starts at the ascendant.
House 2
Money, possessions, talents and self-worth.
House 3
Conversation, learning, siblings, neighbors and short trips.
House 4
Home, family, roots and whatever keeps you grounded.
House 5
Creativity, romance, fun, pleasure and children.
House 6
Daily work, chores, habits and taking care of yourself.
House 7
Partnership, marriage and one-on-one relationships, including contracts and open disputes.
House 8
Intimacy, shared money, inheritance and deep transformation.
House 9
Beliefs, higher education, long journeys and foreign countries.
House 10
Career, reputation, ambition and your role in the world. It starts at the Midheaven.
House 11
Friends, communities, teams and plans for the future.
House 12
The subconscious, solitude, rest, endings and spirituality.

Aspects: the angles between planets

An aspect is a specific angle between two planets, measured along the zodiac. We use the five major aspects, with an allowance (the orb) of up to 8° for conjunctions and oppositions, 7° for trines and squares, and 5° for sextiles.

Conjunction (0°)
The planets sit side by side: their energies merge into one and amplify each other, for better or worse.
Sextile (60°)
Gentle support: an opportunity that opens up once you take the first step.
Square (90°)
Tension: two parts of you want different things, which creates friction but pushes you to act.
Trine (120°)
Harmony: a natural flow and a talent that comes without effort.
Opposition (180°)
Two poles: you look for a balance between them, often through your relationships with other people.

How we calculate your birth chart

We calculate the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets from astronomical ephemerides, in the tropical zodiac that Western astrology uses. Your birth time is converted to Universal Time using historical time zones, and the lunar node is given as the mean node. If another calculator shows different houses, or a node a degree or two away, it's usually using another house system or the true node.

The calculations are astronomically accurate, but astrology is a tradition, not a science. Treat the meanings of planets, signs and houses as a starting point for thinking about yourself, not as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It shows which signs and houses the Sun, Moon and planets were in, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon (the ascendant) and what angles the planets formed with each other. In astrology it's the basis of every personal reading.

How do I calculate my birth chart?

You need your date, time and place of birth. Enter them in the calculator on this page: it converts your birth time to Universal Time with the time zone and daylight saving time of that year, then works out the positions of the planets, the ascendant and the houses. You get the result instantly, free and with no sign-up.

Can I get my birth chart without a birth time?

Yes, though it's incomplete. From the date alone you get the signs of the Sun and planets, the aspects between them and your balance of elements. Without the time, though, there's no way to calculate the ascendant or the houses, and your Moon sign is only certain if the Moon didn't change signs on the day you were born. The calculator tells you if it did.

What are the houses in a birth chart?

The houses are twelve sections of the sky counted from the ascendant. Each one stands for an area of life: the 2nd house for money, the 7th for relationships, the 10th for career. A planet in a house shows where in your life its energy works most strongly. To calculate the houses you need your exact birth time and place.

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your first impression, your style and how you step into new situations. It changes about every two hours on average, which is why it takes your birth time to calculate.

How is a birth chart different from a horoscope?

A horoscope column only looks at your Sun sign, so it's the same for one in every twelve people. A birth chart is calculated for a single moment and place, with the position of every planet, the ascendant and the houses. Even twins born 15 minutes apart can have different rising signs.

What are my big three signs?

Your Sun, Moon and rising sign, the three most important points in a birth chart. The Sun describes your identity, the Moon your emotions and needs, and the rising sign how you meet the world and how others see you. The calculator shows all three at the top of your result.

Why do birth chart calculators give different results?

The signs of the planets should match on any good calculator. Differences usually come from the houses (we use Placidus, others use Whole Sign or Koch), from the lunar node (mean or true) or from a birth time entered in the wrong time zone. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° behind the tropical one, so in a Vedic chart many placements fall a sign earlier.
