Rising sign calculator: find your ascendant

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It changes about every two hours, so to find yours you need your birth date, your exact birth time and your place of birth.

What's my rising sign?

We'll also show you the hours that day when your ascendant was in its sign.

Any date from January 1, 1900, to today.

Local time where you were born, as it appears on your birth certificate. Don't adjust it for daylight saving time: we do that for you.

What is a rising sign (ascendant)?

The ascendant (AC or ASC for short), also called the rising sign, is the point of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon of your birthplace at the moment you were born. The sign this point falls in is your rising sign. Your chart's first house begins there, and directly opposite lies the descendant, the start of the seventh house, which is linked with partnership.

In astrology the ascendant describes how you meet the world: your first impression, your manner and your instinctive way of reacting to new situations. People often say that the Sun is who you are and the rising sign is the front door people come through to reach you.

How to calculate your rising sign

By hand, it takes an ephemeris and a table of houses. The calculator does the same in three steps:

  1. It converts your birth time to Universal Time (UTC), using the time zone and daylight saving rules that applied at your birthplace on that date. In the US that history is patchy: War Time during World War II, Arizona and Hawaii skipping daylight saving time, and start and end dates that have changed several times over the decades.

  2. It calculates local sidereal time, that is, how far the Earth has turned relative to the stars, corrected for the longitude of your birthplace. This tells it which part of the sky was due south of you at that moment.

  3. From the sidereal time, your latitude and the tilt of the Earth's axis (about 23.4°), it finds the point of the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path among the stars, that was crossing the eastern horizon. That point is your ascendant. The same calculation gives the Midheaven and the houses.

Why do you need your exact birth time?

Over 24 hours the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon, so the ascendant changes sign about every two hours on average. On average, because signs rise at different speeds. In New York, Aries and Pisces clear the horizon in about 1 hour 10 minutes, while Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio take about 2½ hours each. That's why, across the US, Leo or Libra rising turns up roughly twice as often as Aries rising.

If your ascendant was close to the edge of a sign when you were born, a few minutes decide the result. The calculator shows the hours that day when your ascendant was in its sign, and warns you when the edge falls within 15 minutes of the time you entered.

Rising sign vs. Sun sign, and your big three

Your Sun sign depends on your birth date, while your rising sign depends on the time and place, so the two are often completely different. Astrology reads them together: the Sun is your essence and what you strive for, and the ascendant is the way you show it. Someone with the Sun in Cancer and Sagittarius rising may come across as carefree and curious about the world, even though inside, home matters most to them.

Add the Moon, your emotional needs, and you have your big three, the core of a birth chart. When the Sun and the ascendant are in the same sign, its traits show more clearly. That happens to people born around sunrise.

The Midheaven: the top of your chart

The Midheaven, or MC (from the Latin medium coeli, “middle of the sky”), is the point of the zodiac that was highest in the sky at the moment you were born, on the meridian of your birthplace. It begins the tenth house and in astrology describes career, ambition and public image. It's calculated together with the ascendant and, like it, needs an exact birth time.

The 12 rising signs: your ascendant in every sign

These descriptions are about how you come across and how others see you. They come from astrological tradition, not from scientific research, and they only give the full picture together with your Sun, your Moon and the rest of your birth chart.

Aries Rising

Chart ruler: Mars

With Aries rising, you meet the world fast and head-on. People see energy, courage and a readiness to act in you, and sometimes impatience too. In a new situation you don't wait to be invited: you're the first to ask a question, the first to suggest a plan and the first to lose interest when things get boring.

Tradition links this ascendant with strong features, a quick step and an athletic build. Your strength is starting things and taking the initiative. You gain the most when you add the patience to finish what you've started.

Taurus Rising

Chart ruler: Venus

With Taurus rising, you come across as calm, down-to-earth and trustworthy. You don't rush: you look around and test the ground first, and only then step into a new situation, but when you do, it's for good. People feel safe around you, because you don't change your mind from one day to the next.

Tradition sees soft features in this ascendant, a pleasant voice and a love of comfort, good fabrics and good food. Look for the shadow side in stubbornness: what starts as stability can easily turn into resisting every change.

Gemini Rising

Chart ruler: Mercury

With Gemini rising, the first things people notice about you are curiosity and a light touch. You strike up conversations easily, ask questions, crack jokes and connect with anyone, from your neighbor to the CEO. You often look younger than your age.

Tradition gives this ascendant a lively face, expressive hands and quick, roving eyes. Your power is flexibility and a way with words. Just make sure that among all the topics you start, you don't lose the one you really care about.

Cancer Rising

Chart ruler: Moon

With Cancer rising, you approach the world carefully and with sensitivity. Before you open up, you check that it's safe, so at first you may seem reserved. But once you let someone into your circle, you look after them like family.

Tradition links this ascendant with a soft, round face and eyes that show your mood. Your moods change like the phases of the Moon, which rules this sign. It's worth remembering before you make a big decision on the spur of the moment.

Leo Rising

Chart ruler: Sun

With Leo rising, you're hard to miss. You bring warmth, confidence and a touch of theater into the room, even when you have stage fright inside. People see you as someone with opinions of your own, who's happy to lead and can make a whole group laugh.

Tradition sees in this ascendant a proud posture, a full head of hair and care for appearance. You like it when someone appreciates your work, and that's fine. It gets harder when outside approval starts to matter more than what you know about yourself.

Virgo Rising

Chart ruler: Mercury

With Virgo rising, you come across as attentive, modest and competent. In a new situation you first observe, analyze and look for where you can be useful. People soon find out that they can rely on you and that you notice details others miss.

Tradition gives this ascendant a neat, well-kept look and a calm, reserved face. Your strength is precision and a wish to help. Just make sure the critical eye that spots mistakes so well isn't turned on yourself too often.

Libra Rising

Chart ruler: Venus

With Libra rising, people see you as polite, tactful and pleasant to be around. You instinctively sense the other person's mood, smooth over tension and look for a solution that works for everyone. You feel most at home in a pair: in teamwork, in friendship, in a relationship.

Tradition links this ascendant with charm, balanced features and a sense of style. Your power is diplomacy. What you find hardest is saying straight out what you want when you know someone might disagree.

Scorpio Rising

Chart ruler: Pluto (traditionally Mars)

With Scorpio rising, there's something intense about you that people can't quite name at first. In the beginning you keep your distance and watch more than you talk, and others get the feeling you can see right through them. You can't stand superficiality: you're all in or not at all.

Tradition gives this ascendant a piercing gaze and a magnetic, slightly mysterious aura. Your strength is depth and resilience in a crisis. Trust comes slowly to you, but once you trust someone, you stand by them through thick and thin.

Sagittarius Rising

Chart ruler: Jupiter

With Sagittarius rising, you bring optimism, humor and curiosity about the world wherever you go. People see you as open, direct and a little restless, someone who always has the next trip or a new idea in mind. You settle into new situations quickly because you treat them as an adventure.

Tradition links this ascendant with tall stature, an easy stride and a broad smile. Your honesty can be disarming, but sometimes it lands harder than you meant it to. It helps to ask before you share your opinion.

Capricorn Rising

Chart ruler: Saturn

With Capricorn rising, you come across as serious, composed and mature beyond your years. In a new place you first check the rules and who's in charge, and only then show what you can do. People soon hand you responsibility, because it's clear you keep your word.

Tradition sees in this ascendant strong cheekbones, a restrained face and understated elegance, and says people with it look younger as they age. Your strength is persistence. Make sure your duties leave room for rest and joy.

Aquarius Rising

Chart ruler: Uranus (traditionally Saturn)

With Aquarius rising, people remember you as an original: friendly but slightly detached, open to everyone and yet walking your own path. You enter new situations with an observer's curiosity and quickly spot what could be done differently.

Tradition gives this ascendant an unconventional style and a gaze that reaches a little further than other people's. Your power is independence and thinking ahead. The people close to you would sometimes like to know not only your views but your feelings too.

Pisces Rising

Chart ruler: Neptune (traditionally Jupiter)

With Pisces rising, you come across as gentle, sensitive and a little elusive. You read the atmosphere in a room before anyone speaks and easily tune in to the person you're talking to, which is why many people feel you understand them without words.

Tradition links this ascendant with dreamy eyes, soft features and an artistic soul. Your power is empathy and imagination. Guard your own boundaries, because you soak up other people's emotions like a sponge.

Frequently asked questions

What does your rising sign mean?

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your first impression, your style and how you step into new situations. Together with your Sun and Moon it makes up the big three, the core of your birth chart.

Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?

Yes. “Rising sign” is the everyday name and “ascendant” the technical one, and both mean the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born. Strictly speaking, the ascendant is an exact degree of the zodiac, and your rising sign is the sign that degree falls in.

How do I find my rising sign?

You need your birth date, your exact birth time and your place of birth. The calculator on this page converts the time to Universal Time, works out the sidereal time for your birthplace and finds the sign that was rising then. By hand it takes an ephemeris and a table of houses, and every conversion is a chance to make a mistake.

Is your rising sign more important than your Sun sign?

Not more important, just different. The Sun describes your essence and what you strive for; the rising sign, how you meet the world and how others see you. Many people recognize themselves more in their rising sign, because its traits show at first glance. Astrology reads the two together, with the Moon as the third pillar.

Which rising sign is the rarest?

Across the US, Aries and Pisces rising, because these two signs rise the fastest. In New York each takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to clear the horizon, against about 2½ hours for Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. The farther north you were born, the bigger the gap. In the Southern Hemisphere it's the other way around, and Virgo and Libra rise the fastest.

Does your rising sign affect your appearance?

Astrological tradition links the ascendant with looks and the way you move: strong features for Aries, a calm, solid build for Taurus, dreamy eyes for Pisces. These are associations from tradition, not links confirmed by research. Your looks come from your genes; the ascendant describes your style, your manner and the first impression you make.

Why do you need your birth time to find your rising sign?

Because over 24 hours the whole zodiac passes over the horizon, and the ascendant changes sign about every two hours on average. Without the time, any of the twelve signs could have been rising that day. Even a 15-minute difference moves it by several degrees, and near the edge of a sign that changes the result.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Ask your parents, look in your baby book or order a long-form copy of your birth certificate from the vital records office of the state where you were born; many of them list the time. If the time can't be found, an astrologer can try to work it out from major events in your life (this is called rectification), but it's always an estimate. Without the time you can still calculate a birth chart with your Sun and planet signs, just without the ascendant and houses.

How do I find my descendant sign?

The descendant is the point directly opposite your ascendant, the one that was setting on the western horizon when you were born. It begins the seventh house and in astrology describes what you look for in a partner and in close relationships. It's always in the opposite sign: with Aries rising, your descendant is in Libra. The calculator shows it next to your ascendant.
