Numerology calculator

We use Pythagorean numerology: each part of the date and each word of your name is reduced on its own, and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept.

Your full date of birth, as on your birth certificate.

Enter your first, middle and last names as on your birth certificate, so your birth surname. Accents are fine: É counts as E, Ñ as N.

How to calculate your life path number

Your life path number is the most important number in numerology. You calculate it from your full date of birth in three steps:

  1. Split your date of birth into month, day and year.
  2. Reduce each of the three to a single digit by adding up its digits until only one is left. Leave 11, 22 and 33 as they are.
  3. Add the three results and keep reducing the total until you reach a single digit or a master number.
Example: July 15, 1990
  1. Day151 + 5 = 66
  2. Month77
  3. Year19901 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 191 + 9 = 101 + 0 = 11
  4. Total6 + 7 + 1 = 141 + 4 = 55

Why reduce each part of the date separately? Because that way the master numbers hidden in a date don't get lost. Take November 9, 2000: the day is 9, November is 11 and the year 2000 gives 2, so 9 + 11 + 2 = 22, a master number. Add up all the digits at once instead (1 + 1 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4) and you'd get an ordinary 4.

That's why online calculators sometimes disagree: some add up every digit at once, others reduce the month, day and year separately. We use the second method and show every step, so you can easily check the result on paper.

Example with a master number: November 9, 2000
  1. Day99
  2. Month11master, kept11
  3. Year20002 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 22
  4. Total9 + 11 + 2 = 22master, kept22

What each life path number means

Each number describes a different life theme: how you act, your strengths and the lesson that keeps coming back. Pick a number to read its full meaning: personality, love, career and the numbers you get along with best.

Name numerology: letter values

Name numbers come from the Pythagorean chart. Each letter of the alphabet has a value from 1 to 9: A is 1, B is 2 and so on up to I, then from J you count from 1 again. Use the full name on your birth certificate, so your birth surname, not one you took when you married.

Pythagorean chart: the value of each letter
123456789
A (vowel)B C D E (vowel)F G H I (vowel)
J K L M N O (vowel)P Q R
S T U (vowel)V W X Y (vowel)Z

Accented letters count as their base letter: É as E, Ñ as N, Ü as U, and ß as SS. Our calculator always counts Y as a vowel; some numerologists count it as a consonant when it sounds like one, as in Yolanda.

Your name gives three numbers. The expression number, also called the destiny number, is the total of all the letters and speaks of your talents. The soul urge number, from the vowels alone, describes what you want deep down. The personality number, from the consonants, is the impression you make on others.

Each word, meaning each first, middle and last name, is reduced on its own before the results are added up. A hyphenated last name counts as two words. Just as with the date, this protects master numbers: Carter adds up to 29, which reduces to 11.

Master numbers 11, 22 and 33

11, 22 and 33 are master numbers, the only two-digit numbers numerology doesn't reduce. Each is an amplified version of its digit: the 11 carries a 2 (1 + 1), the 22 a 4 and the 33 a 6. They mean greater potential, but also more tension: someone with an 11 is often more sensitive than a typical 2, and someone with a 22 feels the pressure of big plans.

In our calculator master numbers are kept at every stage: when they show up in the day (11, 22 or 29, which reduces to 11), in the month (November), in the year (for example 1993, because 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22) and in the final total. Only the personal year and personal month are always reduced to a digit from 1 to 9, because they describe a nine-year cycle.

Personal year number: which year you're in

Your personal year shows where you are in a nine-year cycle. Add the current year to your birth day and month, reducing each of these numbers to a single digit. The result is always a number from 1 to 9, one higher each year: after year 9 a new cycle begins at 1.

We calculate it for the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. Your personal month is your personal year plus the number of the month, also reduced to a single digit.

Example: birthday July 15, year 2026
  1. Day151 + 5 = 66
  2. Month77
  3. Current year20262 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 101 + 0 = 11
  4. Total6 + 7 + 1 = 141 + 4 = 55

What each personal year means

Personal year 1
A year of new beginnings. You're starting a nine-year cycle, so it's a good time for decisions, a new project, a move or a new job. What you plant now will keep growing for years.
Personal year 2
A year of patience and relationships. What you started last year ripens quietly, and you gain the most from cooperation, conversation and diplomacy. Don't force anything to move faster.
Personal year 3
A year of expression and connection. You're easier to notice now, so show what you do: write, create and meet people. Just watch that you don't spread yourself across too many things at once.
Personal year 4
A year of work and foundations. You sort out your finances, home and obligations, build habits and look after your health. Progress is slower, but it lasts.
Personal year 5
A year of change and movement. Expect plot twists, travel, new people and new offers. Flexibility will help you more than sticking to the plan at all costs.
Personal year 6
A year of home and responsibility. Loved ones, your relationship, family and commitments take center stage. It's a good time to move in together, get married or mend an important relationship.
Personal year 7
A year of reflection. You slow down, study and look for answers within. It favors learning, writing, therapy and rest over loud launches.
Personal year 8
A year of harvest. The work of past years may start to pay off: recognition, a promotion, more influence. A good time to ask boldly for what you've earned.
Personal year 9
A year of completion. You're closing the cycle: tidying up, giving away and letting go of what has run its course. You're making room for the new beginning that comes with personal year 1.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate your life path number?

Split your date of birth into month, day and year, reduce each of them to a single digit by adding up its digits, then add the three results and reduce the total. For example, for July 15, 1990: day 1 + 5 = 6, month 7, year 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 10 and 1, and 6 + 7 + 1 = 14, which reduces to 5. Leave 11, 22 and 33 as they are at every stage.

What are master numbers in numerology?

11, 22 and 33 are master numbers, which aren't reduced. They're amplified versions of the digits 2, 4 and 6: stronger intuition (11), the ability to build on a large scale (22) and the need to help others (33). They also carry more tension, which is why many people with a master number only grow into it with age.

How do I calculate my destiny number?

Your destiny number, also called the expression number, comes from your name. Turn each letter of your first, middle and last names into a number from the Pythagorean chart (A = 1, B = 2 … I = 9, then J = 1 and so on again), add up the letters of each word and reduce that total. Then add the results of all the words and reduce again. The vowels alone give your soul urge number, and the consonants your personality number.

What is a personal year number?

It's a number from 1 to 9 that tells you the theme of the current year for you: 1 means new beginnings, 5 change, 9 wrapping things up. You calculate it from your birth day and month plus the current year. It goes up by one every year, and after 9 the cycle starts again.

How accurate is numerology?

Numerology is a tradition, not a science: no research shows that the numbers in your birth date shape your personality or your fate. People use it much like astrology, as a language for thinking about themselves, their strengths and their choices. Treat your result as a prompt for reflection, not a prediction.

Why do different calculators give different results?

Because they use different methods. Some add up all the digits of the date at once, others reduce the month, day and year separately; some keep master numbers, others don't; and Y counts as a vowel in some and as a consonant in others. We reduce each part separately, keep 11, 22 and 33, count Y as a vowel and show every step of the math.

Which name should I use in a numerology calculator?

Classic numerology uses the full name on your birth certificate, so enter your birth surname and every first and middle name you were given at birth. You can also compare the result with your married name or the name you go by every day. Some numerologists read that name as an energy you took on later in life.
