How we calculate compatibility
The score combines three traditions. Each gives between 35 and 95 points, and the overall match is a weighted average: your zodiac sign elements count for 40%, and life path numbers and Chinese animals for 30% each.
Zodiac sign elements (40%)
Every sign belongs to one of four elements: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) or water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Elements that complete each other score highest: fire with air and earth with water (90 points). The same element scores 85, fire with earth and air with water 55, earth with air 50, and fire with water 45.
Life path numbers (30%)
Your life path number comes from your birth date: add up the digits of the month, the day and the year separately, then add the three results together and reduce the total to a single digit or a master number (11, 22, 33). For the comparison, master numbers are reduced to their digit sum. The numbers form three groups: 1–5–7, 2–4–8 and 3–6–9. Two different numbers from the same group score 90 points, the same number 80, and numbers from different groups 60.
Chinese zodiac (30%)
Your animal depends on your birth year, counted from Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. So if you were born in January or early February, you may have the previous year's animal. The best matches are animals of the same trine (95 points), such as the Rat, Dragon and Monkey, and secret-friend pairs like the Rat and Ox (90). The same animal scores 70, a neutral pair 60, and animals on opposite sides of the wheel, like the Rat and Horse, 35.
Astrology, numerology and the Chinese zodiac are traditions, not science. The score shows what these systems say about your birth dates and can be a good conversation starter, but people make a relationship work, not the stars.
Compatibility beyond Sun signs: synastry
The calculator and the chart compare Sun signs, the sign people mean when they ask “What's your sign?” A full compatibility reading, called synastry, goes further: it compares two people's entire birth charts, including the Moon (emotions), Venus (love and pleasure), Mars (desire and drive) and the ascendants. For that you need both people's birth date, time and place.
Your Sun sign is a good starting point, but two people with the same sign can have completely different birth charts. If you know your birth time, check yours with the birth chart calculator.
Numerology compatibility
Numerology compatibility compares two people's numbers, above all the life path numbers worked out from their birth dates. More detailed readings also use numbers from your full name, such as the expression number and the soul urge number.
This calculator uses the life path number, because neither marriage nor a new last name changes it. You'll find how to calculate it step by step, and what each number means, in the numerology calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are compatible?
In astrology the easiest matches are signs of the same element, such as Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and signs whose elements complete each other: fire with air and earth with water, like Taurus and Cancer or Gemini and Leo. The most friction comes from fire with water and earth with air. That doesn't rule out a happy relationship; it just takes more talking.
How do I check compatibility by birth date?
Enter both birth dates in the calculator and choose the kind of relationship. You get an overall score and its three parts: how well your zodiac sign elements, life path numbers and Chinese animals match, each with a short explanation. If you only know your signs, look up the pair in the 12 × 12 chart on this page.
What is synastry?
Synastry is astrological compatibility in full: it compares two people's birth charts to show where they support each other and where they may clash. The simplest version puts two zodiac signs side by side, while full synastry compares whole charts, including the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and ascendant. For that you need both people's birth time and place.
How does numerology compatibility work?
Numerology compatibility compares numbers worked out from two people's birth dates, and sometimes from their names. The most important one is the life path number. Numbers from the same group (1, 5, 7; 2, 4, 8; 3, 6, 9) are considered compatible, and numbers from different groups complementary, though they call for more understanding.
Can incompatible zodiac signs be together?
Yes. A compatibility score is a pointer to what to watch for, not a verdict. Low-scoring pairs often complement each other well, because each brings something the other lacks. What makes a relationship last is communication, respect and shared values, not birth dates.
Why does the score include the Chinese zodiac?
The Chinese zodiac is a separate tradition, centuries old, that also rates pairs: animals of the same trine and secret friends get along, while animals on opposite sides of the wheel clash. It adds a second view to the Western signs, because it's based on your birth year rather than your birth month.
